Ask Annie

When should I call the doctor when my child has a fever?

Posted on Dec 3, 2008

Call a doctor if your infant under three months old has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher (rectal temperature). Call if your three to six month old has a rectal temperature of 101 degrees or higher than 99.5 for more than 24 hours. For six months and older, if the rectal temperature is 101.4 degrees or higher, watch how your child acts. If he or she seems unusually ill or the fever lasts for more than three days, call the doctor. If the fever in children three months to two years is 103 degrees or above, call the doctor even if your child seems to feel fine.
